SEER, HSPF, BTU: Understanding HVAC Terminology

A typical heat pump quote overflows with technical acronyms — SEER, HSPF, BTU, HRV — presented as if everyone already understands them. Here's what they actually mean, in the order they matter most for a Quebec homeowner.
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)
Measures a unit's cooling efficiency over a full season, not just at one instant. The higher the number, the less electricity the unit consumes to produce the same cooling effect. Current models generally range from 14 for entry-level lineups to over 33 for the best top-tier lineups.
HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor)
The heating-mode equivalent of SEER. This is the most relevant number for a Quebec buyer — since the heat pump mainly serves to heat through long winter months, a high HSPF has a more direct impact on your Hydro-Québec bill than a high SEER, unlike a climate where cooling dominates usage.
BTU (British Thermal Unit)
The unit of measure for a unit's heating or cooling capacity. Heat pumps are often sold in "tons" (1 ton = 12,000 BTU/h). A poorly sized capacity reduces efficiency and comfort in both directions: too small, the unit struggles to keep up with demand in extreme cold; too large, it short-cycles frequently, wearing out components prematurely without improving comfort.
Cold-climate rating
Refers to heat pump lineups specifically engineered to maintain high heating capacity well below -15°C, unlike standard models that lose significant performance at those temperatures. In Quebec, this is a spec worth checking first, often more decisive than SEER for real comfort in January.
Inverter technology
Describes a compressor that continuously modulates its speed based on demand, rather than only running in on/off mode at full power. This technology, now standard on nearly all current residential heat pumps, improves efficiency, reduces noise, and maintains a more stable temperature than a fixed-speed system.
Defrost cycle

HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) vs ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator)
